On September 13th, 63 students from Mr. Ted Hendricks marketing class and Mr. Vic Vroegrop’s engineering/design classes traveled to Whirlpool Headquarters to start the Whirlpool Innovations Challenge. The challenge is to design a product, with the help from a volunteer Whirlpool mentor, and present the design when the challenge concludes in December.

“The biggest thing about this project for me, is mentoring. Every team will have a mentor from Whirlpool who volunteers and is assigned with them for the entire four months to help them become better students” Ms. Ellen Dutton said. Ms. Dutton is in charge of the Whirlpool Innovations Challenge.

Kara Lehner, a junior, is currently participating in the challenge and thinks it is a very good opportunity. She stated the goal is to design a better refrigerator, taking into account different issues like cool air escaping when the door is opened.

“I think it’s kind of cool to get a different perspective on it from a producer’s view instead of a consumer’s, and just know if this is a career I would be interested in the future” Kara said.

Kara, Mr. Hendricks, and Mr. Vroegrop all stated this challenge is a great way for students to learn, and a great aspect to add to a resume. The Whirlpool Innovations Challenge will be recognized by many people as these students go throughout life.

“It is a good opportunity, and we don’t’ normally get this in high school” Kara said. This shows SJHS gives students chances to thrive inside and outside of school while learning real world skills that help students later in life.
