Sam Simpson commits to Grand Valley State University for football

As the 2020-2021 school year progresses, plenty of St. Joe athletes have begun committing to colleges to further their academic and athletic careers.

One athlete, Sophia Paevase, committed to Kalamazoo Valley College for softball as a pitcher and infielder.

“I love being an athlete and I’m glad I am fortunate enough to continue my education in college,” Sophie said.

Although it has worked out for Sophie, recruitment wasn’t as easy this year due to the on-going effects of Covid-19.

“Being recruited was a little bit more difficult this year because I wasn’t able to be seen by the coaches in person. The main part of recruiting is to be able to show off your skills during a game and obviously Covid didn’t allow that.”

Despite this setback, Sophie and other athletes like Sam Simpson--who has committed to Grand Valley State University for football as a defensive end--were still able to secure a future playing their sport collegiately.

“I’m looking forward to the competition and the challenges I will have to tackle,” Sam said.

Like the two of them, other St. Joe students plan to continue playing their sports in college. To keep up with ongoing signings and SJHS sports related updates, check out the official twitter for St. Joe’s athletics @sjbearssports.
