Demystifying the Stars

Many of us follow celebrities’ lives. Whether it’s celebrities that we like, or some that we don’t, it can be easy to wrap ourselves up in these internet sensations. We may see them “candidly” in paparazzi photos, scandals, and in public events, but how much of that is truthfully candid? Celebrities are masters of public appearances—paparazzi photos can be staged, scandals can be used for publicity, and celebrities are trained to perform at public events. We don’t know anything about these people. We don’t know their personalities—no matter how much their reality shows want us to believe that we do—or their true intentions. While we can research Hollywood’s dark secrets and behind the scenes, we can’t fully see behind the scenes because there is so much we won’t ever know. We can look at celebrity couples and think, “that’s an unexpected pairing,” but how do we do that? Have we ever had a conversation with them and gotten to know them?

The same can be said in our own lives. Think of the people you see at this school; then, think about the people you truly know. What are their dreams? Who are their mentors? What makes them unique? So many of the people we see roaming the halls are complete strangers—even people we call friends are sometimes mysteries to us. We can be wrong from judging people at first impressions, so be cautious; you’re only seeing a small sliver of who a person really is, and most often, it’s the part they let you see.
