Many of us pride ourselves with keeping up with current events—nowadays, it’s hard to steer clear of the news on social media. Everywhere you look, people are posting about politics, human rights, legislatures, and so on, keeping you in the know. However, as exposed in the new Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, these media sites pose a threat to our source-intake, and our sense of self. Being fed news that only aligns with a certain viewpoint pushes us further down the rabbit hole of global polarization. Instead of seeing both sides and coming to conclusions on our own, we allow social medias to spoon-feed us pre-decided conclusions. In this month’s Bearing Down, we delve into this topic, and suggest ways you can maintain your sense of self in this digital world.
