Nepo-Babies: The Nepotism Nexus in Hollywood

Along with blockbuster movies, perpetual TV series, and a big sign, Hollywood is littered with corruption. Nepotism is one of such forms. For readers unaware of the term, Nepotism can be defined as “the act of granting an advantage, privilege, or position to relatives or close friends in an occupation or field.” Essentially, jobs or positions may come easier for those with family members already involved in said job or position. You’d be surprised at which actors can be what's classified as “Nepo-babies' ', so let's take a look at who worked their way into Hollywood and who was born in it.

One recent example of a Nepo-Baby is from one of Netflix's most popular shows. Stranger Things took the world by storm back in 2016 by bringing us a thrilling story, great setting, and a loveable cast of characters. One of these was Robin Buckley, played by Maya Hawke. Although Hawke’s character didn’t make an appearance until season 3 of the show, she was immediately adored by fans and recognized as a crucial character to the show. Unknown to many however, was Maya’s namesake. Her Father Ethan Hawke, best known for Before Sunrise and Training day, and her mother Uma Thurman, best known for Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction had Maya back when they were married in 1998. Both parents are highly accomplished and respected actors, giving Maya an almost unfair advantage in the world of Hollywood.

With nepotism being more present than ever, I was curious what a person in minor show business might think about its involvement in Hollywood: Seth Martin, 11, who will play the leading role in St. Joseph High school’s rendition of Oklahoma, had mixed opinions on the topic.

“I think it does happen, I dont think it’s right, but it’s reality and just something we have to deal with. There’s nothing we can really do to change it,” Seth said.

It’s hard to tell which actors landed roles based on skill or bloodline, but something says it has to be both. Although it seems quite a few actors are in fact, Nepo-babies, most of the Hollywood world seems to base their casting decisions on skill over name. Regardless, those with previous ties or family members seem to have an advantage compared to the rest of us. At least for now.
