Fall sports in 2021 had great success at SJHS. The boys tennis team, boys football team, girls swim team, and girls cross country team all had state runs.

The boys tennis team made it into the Division 3 State Finals once again. The team has competed in a state tournament every year since 2010 in both Division 2 and Division 3. The team finished in 12th place with a total of five points. It’s not very known around the school how successful this team has been, finding ways to make deep runs most years.

“The season went well this year; every day the team came prepared to give their best effort,” Anriudh Ale, 9 said.

The boys football team advanced to the state finals for the first time since 2007. They played football powerhouse Dewitt High School in Jenison, MI in the State Semi-Final. They were defeated 43-7, ending their season.

“Nobody has done this since 2007, and it just feels good to know that I left my mark on St. Joe,” Malik Immoos, 12, said. Dewitt went on to play Martin Luther King academy at Ford Field, where they were defeated 25-21.

The girls cross country team advanced to the State Finals at Michigan International Speedway. They finished 17th out of 28 teams in the Division 1 Finals. Riley Mullen, 12 and Elena Figueora, 9 both finished in the Top 100 competitors.

In girls swimming and diving, the girls 200-medley relay team comprised of Mia Wurster, Breanne Pratley, Adeline Straub, and Madison Tyburczy, with Emily Veine as a reserve competed in the DIvision 2 Swimming and Diving Finals at Oakland University. In addition, Madison Tyburczy competed in the 100 meter breaststroke, Mia Wurster competed in the 100 meter backstroke, Adeline Straub competed in both the 50 meter and 100 meter freestyle, and Gabi Wiskow competed in the Diving competition.

As a whole, all of our sports teams had great seasons, but this year was rather special, considering four out of six team sports went to state tournaments. No teams won state, but this year has been one to remember.
