Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

On January 13, 40 SJHS students received Scholastic Art Awards, from Gold Keys to Silver Keys to Honorable Mentions.

“Our participation in this regional art competition shows not only the level of competence and talent our teachers and students exhibit but also the point that even during the pandemic, our students are competing and attaining high expectations,” Superintendent Thomas Bruce said in the Herald Palladium.

Students submitted their artwork to the competition through December, and anxiously waited for results. Ruby Rappette, 10, received her Gold Key with great excitement.

“I feel honored to represent my school in the Scholastic competition because it’s a big art show that’s not always easy to get into,” Ruby said. “I love art competitions because it’s a way for artists to show off their work.”

Regional winners also have a chance to win a national award, which is to be announced March 17. These winners will proceed to New York City, for a ceremony at Carnegie Hall followed by opportunities to display and improve their art. These winners will also be mentioned in a New York Times article.
