It’s Sunny Forever
It’s undeniable—It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is the best sitcom to be produced.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows five immoral bar owners who are usually drunk and antagonizing the city. Dark humor isn’t everyone’s favorite form of comedy, but it is an effective part of the comedy. This show continues to entertain people today, having been renewed for four more seasons as of 2020, making it the longest-scripted comedy ever.
The show’s success wasn’t always the case when Sunny aired in 2005. The cast had $200 to make due for the first episode, according to Vulture Lists magazine. Regardless, the show has a history of making it work when the budget is tight. Their creative skills and crazy imaginations kept new ideas brewing for comedy with no money—and that’s talent.
One of the coolest stories about this show is how actor Danny DeVito came to be a part of the show. After season one of Sunny, FX wasn’t impressed with the numbers and was ready to cancel. The gang brought on the all-famous Danny DeVito to play (Frank Reynolds) and he has been a beloved character ever since. It’s safe to say DeVito was the spark the show needed.
In the show, the gang loves to scheme and plan for all kinds of reasons. They are inspired easily. These schemes need money to work and Frank Reynolds has the funds. Once a businessman and now multi-millionaire. Frank flows the gang with endless funding for flipping houses and holding beauty contests.
The actors in this show will also contribute their own lines to the script, which is probably why their jokes feel so natural. The most hysterical aspect of this sitcom is the exploding emotion. Rage is the core of The Gang. There once was a whole episode based solely on the quote “reason will prevail.” This was to trump their emotions in the decisions around the bar.
This show is a major trigger warning for you snowflakes out there. Watch and laugh with caution. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has always stuck to what it’s good at: dark humor, and endless bird jokes. Never has it changed due to critics; it’s kept the same humor going for 15 seasons strong.
Unlike these other sitcoms that have to tell you when to laugh, Sunny has no need for a laugh track. These episodes are so out of ordinary and so perfectly played, I just wish I could go back and laugh at these jokes for the first time. My recommendation for a first episode is, “The Gang Goes To The Water Park.” It’s one of the most classic episodes produced. Just a bunch of rejects, doing the most in a water park. From faking AIDS to get to the front of the line, to finessing jewelry from the lost and found.
These actors dedicated their life to this show, making it arguably the best-scripted comedy of all time. When a sitcom is written and acted by lifelong best friends, the result is the most iconic comedy to ever air. A show with as a dynamic cast of characters as the gang deserves to be running for such a long time.
