Stop Appropriating the Evil Eye

Dating back to before the sixth century, the “evil eye” symbol has been used as a general protector of its wearer, and its popularity is recently surging. An evil eye is a protection piece that's considered to block harm and negative energy. As its name suggests, the piece is designed in the shape of an eye and is traditionally blue or green.

The idea of an evil eye has spread across many different cultures, and is considered an open practice. According to an Encyclopedia Britannica entry about the evil eye, “the concept was [used] by the Greeks and Romans in similar superstitions. They believe that the gods and goddesses are a way of bringing bad luck and misfortune to those who deserve it.”

Today, this piece is not limited to cultural use. A recent increase of evil eye necklaces worn on social media has spread misinformation about its purpose, which is disrespectful and ignorant. Social media influence has belittled the cherished cultural symbol to a mere fashion trend.

TRT World’s “What you need to know about the evil eye” video delves into lesser known concepts about the superstition regarding evil eyes. A spokesperson from TRT went into detail about uses of the evil eye within different cultures, such as casting blessings to protect yourself from accidentally giving the evil eye.

“The evil eye is an example of how one soul may affect another through unseen connections between them, as we’re all influenced by our environment.” Rabbi Abraham Issac Kook said.

TRT World’s video suggests that the evil eye is an open practice, but they do recommend education on the subject. As far as believing in the evil eye and its power? Entirely your call.

With the idea that this practice is open, it’s important to educate ourselves and maintain its cultural meaning to avoid insensitivity. I believe that as long as you don’t hold ignorance to the practice, you can wear the protection piece. Nevertheless, if you are persistent in wearing this piece without general education I would recommend finding further information.
