Winter athlete spotlight

With the school year just over halfway over, many SJHS students find their schedules filling up with school, work, and other extracurriculars. Winter athletes are some of the busiest, and the following have found a perfect balance to excel both in school and in their sports.

Gabe Lingk, a swimmer, is one of these student-athletes. No matter the scenario, he always encourages his teammates to do what they need to be successful at meets. Although Gabe is not a captain, he has taken the role of leading the team in warmups. He is also there to help and support some of the younger swimmers. “I’d love to have a whole team just like Gabe,” said Coach Tim Straub.

Griffin Shinrock, a junior small forward who stands at 6‘2”, has played on the varsity team since he was a sophomore. His team contribution is simple: he wants to win and not make mistakes so he can be the best player he can be. To have his team reach their full potential, he likes to minimize their turnovers.

The next leader is Drake Collins. He’s the only senior on the wrestling team and he likes to share his knowledge as an elder member of the team. Through that, it sends motivation to his teammates and keeps them moving. As a leader, he wishes that his team can compete to its full capacity so everyone can see their mistakes as learning opportunities.

Switching to the other level of competition, Alex Malone represents the girls basketball team. To keep her teammates motivated, on game day, Alex helps coordinates outfits. When her team does that, it encourages students to come to their games and cheer them on no matter what the scenario is.
