People rally in Lansing in response to the continual delay of winter sports seasons

On Saturday, January 30, citizens of Michigan gathered at the capitol building in support of the Let Them Play movement. The start of contact practices and competition for sports such as basketball and wrestling has been pushed back to February 21, upsetting many high school athletes.

According to Fox 17 News, the lawyer representing the Let Them Play movement has filed a lawsuit against the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services director, Elizabeth Hertel.

Conner Wright, 11, shared that he agrees with the Let Them Play coalition because students benefit from playing sports. His parents, who agree, attended the rally on Saturday.

“A lot of kids our age have dreamed of playing on their varsity team,” Conner said. “And a lot of it has to do with mental health–it hurts us to have that taken away.” He did note that he understands that athletes should be wearing masks while playing for protection.
