I Love Soup

Something you might not know about me is that I love soup. I mean, what’s not to love?

First of all, soup is perfect for every occasion.  Feeling a tad icky? Slurp down a cup of chicken noodle soup! Is it a chilly Halloween night? Go ahead and whip up some chili! Studying at Panera? Might as well order the broccoli cheddar soup for some extra ka-pow!

Soup is incredible. I’m in plain awe at soup–so much awe that I’m struggling to write this piece. My love for soup stems from my grandma's chicken and wild rice recipe: rice, chicken, some types of seasoning, broth, and most importantly, a lot of lemon juice.  The Crockpot waiting on the kitchen counter brings me peace. Whatever happened throughout the day washes away– it’s just me and the bowl of soup. However, it’s criminal to forget a handful of oyster crackers on top.

I would eat soup for every meal if I could; for the most part, it’s usually filled with a lot of nutrients. A crispy chicken sandwich leads to a sluggish day. However, a nice bowl of chicken noodle crammed will carrots, celery, and oyster crackers can cure diseases. Elementary school sick days where I was snuggled up in my blanket and locked in on The Backyardigans were incomplete without a bowl of soup. And, as a bonus, it’s not super filling– so the more the merrier.

Soup is warm. It makes chilly December days, locked up in the house exciting. Sure, the roads may be covered and stores closed, but at least you can look forward to a nice steamy bowl of chicken noodle soup, miso soup, chili, or whatever the day calls for. Soup is also cold– like gazpacho.

“Oh yeah. gazpacho is so so so good,” said Dylan Conybeare, 12, fellow Wind-Up Staffer and media team member.

Soup holds memories. Remember sitting at the kitchen table with your best friend making goofy words with the alphabet soup? I do! Remember sitting in the back booth at Panera, attempting to comprehend geometry while dipping a grilled cheese in tomato soup? I do! Remember waking up at 1 a.m. craving a bowl of soup and crawling downstairs just to find your sister had already eaten it? I do! Soup is perfect for every second of every minute of every hour of every day.
