Celebrities won’t Solve Your Skincare Problems

Celebrities have always been envied for their flawless skin. So, when channels like Vogue Beauty Secrets were made or skincare lines like JLo Skin came out, teenagers flocked to the videos to take notes and buy the products, hoping for similar results. But, when these celebrities disclose their skincare routines, they tend to leave out information about their dermatologist-prescribed products, enhancement surgeries, or diets that may be major factors to their skin’s health.

Kylie Jenner created her own skincare line, Kylie Skin, in July 2019. In a video titled, “My everyday skincare routine,” she walked through what she claimed was her comprehensive skincare routine, and in it, she only used Kylie Skin products. She promotes these products as if they’re the sole reason she has such clear skin, but earlier in 2019, she had admitted in an interview that she sees her family’s dermatologist. In addition, she posted a picture using a sunscreen that was not her own brand. It’s not wrong for her to use other skincare brands, but it is misleading for her to present her products as the reason her skin looks the way it does, then proceed to use other products. 

In a Wind-Up Survey sent out to the student body, 70% of the responders said they don’t believe that celebrities with their own skincare lines primarily use their own products. In the end, their goal is often to sell their products by any means, and it feels that a lot of students understand that. 

Kennedy Yeager, 11, expressed that she finds it unfair for celebrities to credit their clear skin to their own products without presenting all the facts because, for the most part, their products are targeted towards teens.

“Teenagers are self-conscious about how their skin looks—acne is a very sensitive subject—so when these celebrities credit their skincare line and it doesn’t work at all because it’s just more products for them to sell and make money. I think it’s not fair,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy believes that if a celebrity is trying to promote their product by using their own skin as an example, they should admit if they are using other products too or getting treatments and skin surgeries done. 

The channel Vogue Beauty Secrets took off in 2018 to share the beauty routines of stars. Each video takes viewers into the bathroom of a celebrity where they showcase their favorite products, sometimes sharing makeup brands, and others focusing solely on skincare.

But it’s hard to believe that when the stars share their nighttime routine to keep their skin clear that they’re disclosing everything. In Lily Collins’s video of her routine, all of the products were from skincare lines; there were no prescription topical creams. While there’s no way to know for sure, it’s hard to believe that she doesn’t use anything medical grade to keep her skin clear. 

With celebrity’s access to dermatologists and expensive skincare products, I think it’s time high schoolers stop looking to them for skincare advice and instead follow professionals
