For Isabela Diaz, 10 fashion is what makes school fun. Though she may not always be excited to walk in those double doors in the morning, it’s a little more bearable when she wears whatever she wants.
“You get to pick out your outfits every day and express yourself… It just makes school more enjoyable,” Isabela said.
Though she occasionally shops from brands like Urban Outfitters and Pacsun, Isabela thrifts most of her clothes. A fan of layering, she usually looks for things like turtlenecks and unique long-sleeves, like the one seen in her photos. She’s also a fan of streetwear-style pants, like cargos or carpenter pants.
She takes style inspiration from people around her, as well as Pinterest, but makes sure to put her own spin on things.
“In prior years, I would just, like, do what other people did, just to fit in,” she said. “But now I just dress however I want, and I don’t care.”

Though Emily Watson, 12 dresses to express herself, she also views fashion as a way to strike up conversation, and even new friendships.
“I feel like when you look at someone, and see how they’re dressed, it can kind of make them approachable, or not approachable,” Emily said.
Emily thrifts her clothes and a lot of her jewelry, shopping at local stores like the Lighthouse Attic in Stevensville. She loves long “grandma” skirts with “odd, really ugly” patterns, because they can be styled in many ways.
She’s also not afraid to do some work on a garment, such as the ruffled pants in her photos, which she altered herself. She also makes some of her jewelry, like her stop sign earrings.
Emily draws inspiration from different people around her, like her friends and sister. She feels that not defining herself to a single aesthetic is what allows her to stand out and fully express herself.
“It’s almost like becoming a different person every day,” she said.
