2022 SJHS Music Recap
Many of us know the heartbreak, laughter and joy the teen years can bring. As we go through these trying times, we seek partnerships and companions. This companionship can come from other people, things, or even music: the one thing that will always be there for you in your hardest times. Follow me along as we recap the music that has gotten our very own peers through heartbreak, loss, dance parties, and late nights.
Just as headphones have evolved with time, from headphones or earbuds to noise-canceling airpods, so does our music taste. We start to find styles, sounds, and different artists we like or relate to. Information provided by the WindUp survey shows SJHS’ favorite genres this year–among them were Pop, Rap, Country, and R&B.
“I think they [the student body] probably listen to rap the most purely because it’s got a catchy beat and the songs are really easy to remember, which make people like them.” Molly Heddle, 10 said.
Music can influence our mood in different ways. We process the musical patterns we hear through our auditory cortex. Whether you’re listening to Mitski or The Smiths at full volume for a good cry, or cranking the Arctic Monkeys for an upbeat rush, remember it will influence your mood. No matter who the artist is or the song being played, all music influences us.
“I would say music influences my mood very heavily. It doesn't necessarily put me in any mood, but it can certainly make whatever mood of mine more extreme.” Molly, 10 said.
If you’ve ever looked around the hallways while walking to your class, maybe you’ve wondered, what song are they listening to? They might be listening to something upbeat to quicken their pace, maybe they are listening to something calm. Well, no need to worry as I have the answer to your question. I asked a few of your peers what their ideal hallway walking song is.
“Clouded by Brent Faiyaz” Taylor Jennings, 9 said.
“Georgia by Phoebe Bridgers” Violet Burritt, 10 said.
“2 Cups of Blood by Gravediggaz” James Diamond, 12 said.
Many thanks for joining me in this look back at the music trends in SJHS for 2022. Just remember, if you aren’t blasting music in your ears while you are traveling the great distances of the SJHS halls, then it’s time to realize you’re the odd one out. So shove those earbuds in, crank the volume to full blast and get a move on, no dilly dallying, you have a class to get to.
