On Wednesday, January 13, the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump on charges of incitement of insurrection. The insurrection charges come after a mob stormed the U.S capitol building last week, and forms the basis of the new impeachment charges brought against the president. The House passed the articles of impeachment by a vote of 232-197. This is the second time the House has passed impeachment charges against President Trump, making him the only U.S president to have been impeached twice. The articles will now pass to the Senate floor for a trial, where if convicted, the Senate will determine the punishment for the incumbent president. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has stated that he will not use emergency powers to reconvene the Senate before January 19th, making a Senate trial unlikely before the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20th. Among the 10 republicans who broke ranks and voted in favor of impeachment were Michigan representatives Peter Meijer and Fred Upton of Michigan’s 3rd and 6th congressional districts, respectively.
