Quarantine Fashion Spotlight
Savannah VerHage, 11, styles herself with clashing patterns or colors— “clothes that are considered ‘ugly.’” Through this experimentation of fashion, she assembles unique outfits that complement her creative personality. Though she pulls off a stylish look daily, she still finds the ability to consider practicality. “My go-to article is easily a zip-up hoodie… They are just so easy to throw on and look very effortless and cool,” Savannah says. For words of advice for fellow high schoolers, she encourages straying from trends every once in a while. “You will develop a much more defined and unique style, plus your clothes will likely last much longer in your closet.”
Drawing inspiration from figures like Frank Lero, Dallon Weekes, and Andy Warhol, Eliot Schlaack, 10, rocks an everyday “emo artist who comes from a hipster background” style. With his combination of punk, hipster, and artsy styles—accentuated with comic flares like his “memes” necklace and funny socks—Eliot considers his clothes to be an expression of his dynamic personality. “I think my style is unique, especially for where we live, because I like to take a lot of different cultures and mash them together,” he says. Though confiding he outgrew a “wannabe emo kid phase” once out of middle school, band merch and jeans continue to be a staple of his fashion. “Once I got into high school, I started to expand my closet and add some more articles… I add lots of accessories, and I know how to create better-looking outfits.”
