Students encouraged to regain class credit in SJHS summer school program

The SJHS building will only be empty for a few days before it is filled with summer school attendees. The sessions take place in the student center and media center.

While June 10 marks the long-awaited end of the year for most SJHS students, some will be returning to the building from June 13 to July 1 for summer school–both as participants and as tutors. The program is designed to allow students to recover credit in core subjects by taking and passing online courses in the desired subject. They do so with the help of a body of NHS student tutors that were recruited for the summer job.

“I tutor to form a connection and help kids in a different way than a teacher lecturing,” Alana Voglewede, 11, said.

The sessions have seen increased numbers of attendants since last year due the massive jump in students taking–and failing–online classes post-pandemic. However, this hasn’t changed the program’s effectiveness.

“If they show up, we get them through. We have a 100% success rate,” Mrs. Nicholie, one of the program’s organizers, said. “The magic of summer school is the NHS tutors–that’s why we have 100%.”

For more information on summer school, students can stop by the guidance office for a pamphlet or talk to their counselor.
